Sequoias captures Central Valley Conference championship, four CVC teams qualify for NorCal Playoffs

Thanks to a 71-60 victory over West Hills College Lemoore in their regular-season finale, College of the Sequoias captured the outright 2021-22 Central Valley Conference women's basketball championship.

COS ended the conference schedule with an impressive 10-game winning streak and an 11-1 record to edge out second-place Merced College at 10-2. Fresno City College was third at 9-3, followed by West Hills Lemoore in fourth place with a 6-6 mark.

For Giants' head coach Ray Alvarado, it was his fifth Central Valley Conference title in 12 seasons at the college.

"I'm really proud of the team," said Alvarado. "It's a great accomplishment with everything that was going on."

Those top four teams extended their seasons by qualifying for the upcoming Northern California Regional Playoffs.

With a 23-4 overall record, Fresno City earned the conference's top seed at No. 4 for the tournament. The Rams will host No. 13 Chabot College (14-12) on Thursday (Mar. 3) in a second-round game.

Sequoias enters the postseason with a 21-5 record and is the No. 6 seed. The Giants host a second-round contest against No. 11 Modesto Junior College (20-6) on Thursday.

At 18-9, Merced was named the No. 10 seed. The Blue Devils hit the road to play at No. 7 Santa Rosa Junior College (18-9) in a Round 2 game on Thursday.

West Hills Lemoore is 16-11 overall and qualified as the No. 16 seed. The Golden Eagles play a first-round game on Tuesday (Mar. 1), hosting No. 17 College of the Sequoias at Golden Eagle Arena, site of the 2022 CCCAA State Championships.
