TAFT, CA – Entering his second year as Women's Basketball Head Coach at Taft College, Romeo Lagmay, Jr. claimed his 300th career win on December 7, 2024, against Los Medanos College.
Coach Lagmay has 18 years' experience as a collegiate head coach at various levels in the women's division and 24 years' experience overall coaching both men and women. His first job as a head coach started in 2006 in West Virginia at NCAA Division II Salem International University. For 21 years, Coach Lagmay was the school's all-time winningest coach. His record was surpassed by one victory in 2023.
Then he moved to Alabama for six seasons at the helm of NAIA powerhouse Talladega College becoming the all-time winningest coach in over nearly three decades, winning a national championship in 2010 and ranking top 10 in the nation in 2014.
The next transition was to the state of Montana where he coached for nine seasons at NJCAA Division I Dawson Community College. He is currently the all-time winningest coach at Dawson, holding the record for the most wins in a single season, and the best 3-point shooting percentage in a single season in the two-year college division at 76%.
Returning home to his native state of California in the summer of 2023, Coach Lagmay took on the reins as head coach at Taft College. Last season, Taft College had the #1 best turnaround record in the state of California from 4 wins to 19 wins, tying the school record for the most wins in a season and advancing to the second round of playoffs.
"It truly is a blessing and humbling experience to embark on this wonderful journey being able to have coached at different levels. It doesn't happen without the student-athletes who did the most to make these achievements possible. And I am forever grateful to those assistant coaches who were by my side wholeheartedly and campus administrators who allowed me to use their school's platform. I'm just having fun living life with my amazing wife and daughter, thanking God for his blessings," said Coach Lagmay.
