FRESNO - With Central Valley Conference supremacy on the line, Fresno City College women's soccer rebounded from an early 1-0 deficit, earning a 4-1 victory over rival Clovis Community College on Tuesday afternoon. Fresno City and Clovis entered Tuesday afternoon's contest undefeated in the CVC through the first week of conference play. The Rams, the defending CCCAA, CVC and national champions, played host to a Crush team coming off a pair of lopsided victories over CVC opponents last week.
Fresno City found themselves behind midway through the first half of play, as Clovis' Brooke Gill drew first blood with a goal in the 29th minute, putting the Crush up 1-0. The Rams would counter in the 45th minute just before intermission, as Sophomore forward Raina Wristen (Madera, Calif./Liberty HS) scored what would be her first goal of the afternoon, locking things up at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Both teams remained tied at one for the first 27 minutes of play in the second half, before Fresno City's offense took control of the match, recording three goals in an eight minute span. Midfielder Jasmin Aguirre (Fresno, Calif./Edison HS) recorded her second goal of the season in the 77th minute to give Fresno City their first lead of the match. The Rams would give themselves a comfortable cushion through the remainder of the contest, as Wristen scored a pair of goals in the 80th and 85th minutes to complete the hat trick, and give Fresno City a 4-1 victory over Clovis.
With the victory, Fresno City takes sole possession of 1st place in the Central Valley Conference, improving to 8-1-3 on the year and 2-0 in CVC play. Clovis falls to 8-2-2 overall, 2-1-0 in conference, and into a tie for second place with West Hills Lemoore. The Rams will look to stay undefeated in conference play this Friday, when they play host to the visiting College of the Sequoias (1-7-0; 1-2-0). That match is scheduled to kick off at 4 PM.
