Playing two games at the College of the Sequoias Wyndham Classic, the Cerritos College men's basketball team split their two games. The Falcons (6-7) opened with a 78-68 loss to Fresno City College on Thursday and followed with a 67-56 win over the host Giants on Friday. The team will get a week off before traveling to Porterville College for a 5:00 p.m. game next Saturday.
Cerritos vs. Fresno City: Although they received double-digit scoring from four players, the Falcons saw a second-half run by the Rams give them enough distance to post the win. The game was a battle of lead changes until Fresno City went on an 11-0 run over a 4:28 span. The Fresno City run was stopped on a jumper by sophomore Jacob Washington (Washington Prep HS/Los Angles Harbor College) with 5:58 remaining to make it a 65-52 game. Both teams then traded three-pointers, but the Falcons trailed by double-figures for the majority of the remainder of the game. Freshman Jaishon Forte (Rancho Forte HS) led the team with 16 points and eight rebounds, which included draining a trio of three-pointers. Washington produced 13 points and six rebounds, while the duo of sophomore Jalen Washington (Bishop Montgomery HS) and freshman Joshua Harrison (Onate, NM HS) each produced 10 points.
Cerritos vs. College of the Sequoias: Taking on the Giants, the team opened up a nine-point lead at halftime (35-26) and limited their opponents to just 28% shooting from the field. A three-pointer from sophomore Jeremiah Galang (Narbonne HS) early in the second half increased the Falcons lead to 40-27, with Jalen Washington following with a jumper to increase the lead to 15 points. Galang netted another shot from long distance to retain the 15-point advantage (48-33) with 14:11 left. It was freshman Dorian Harris (Cerritos HS) who hit the next long-range jumper with 10:18 left to put Cerritos in front, 53-36, which was the team's largest lead of the night. Harris would finish with a game-high 16 points off the bench and added five rebounds, with Jalen Washington contributing 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Galang scored all nine of his points from three-point range and also pulled down four rebounds, with Jacob Washington ending with seven points and seven boards.
