Pirates start new streak with 94-40 win over Merced

FRESNO -- Less than 24 hours after seeing its 20-game win streak snapped, the Orange Coast College women's basketball team came out cranky and took it out on Merced College en route to a 94-40 win on Saturday at the Fresno City College Crossover.

Sabrina Lopez came through with a solid all-around game with 24 points, six rebounds and five steals for the defending state champion Pirates (9-1), while Bridgette McIntyre added 18 points and eight rebounds.

Three others players hit double figures in points for OCC, including Hailey Estrada (14 points, six rebounds, seven steals), Alyssa Dreessen (12 points, six rebounds) and Makena Ching (11 points, eight rebounds).

Saturday's convincing win came on the heels of Coast's first loss in 21 games dating back to last season as the Pirates fell to host Fresno City College, 76-68.

The Rams (9-2), ranked fifth in Northern California and 10th in the state, earned their victory over the previously-No. 1-ranked Pirates by holding OCC to 34% shooting from the floor and just 5-of-24 from 3-point range. On the other end of the stat sheet, FCC was a red-hot 11-of-25 from beyond the arc, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Ashari Cassell led Coast with 17 points and seven rebounds, Lopez added 16 points and McIntyre tossed in 14 points.

OCC's loss snapped a 20-game win streak, dating back to last year's lone blemish -- a 66-61 setback to Santa Ana which ALSO snapped a 20-game win streak.

(On the positive side of things ... Coast is 41-2 in its last 43 games played).

The Pirates look for two in a row on Wednesday when they host another state-ranked opponent -- 18th-ranked Long Beach City College -- on Wednesday at 5 p.m. inside the Peterson Gymnasium. (TICKETS).
