Hawks Fall in Season Opener

SACRAMENTO (11-30) – Cosumnes River played their first game of the season Tuesday night as they took on Merced Community College in Sacramento. The Blue Devils led by eleven at halftime and won 62-47.   

In the first quarter, the Hawks gained their largest lead of the ballgame, at 2-0, on a Chelsea Shirley-Ohashi layup with 9:25 left in the quarter. The Blue Devils would then go on a 7-0 run, capped by an Amelia Smith three pointer with 8:14 left, to give the Blue Devils the lead for good at 7-2. The Blue Devils led 16-10 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Blue Devils would hold the Hawks at arms' length. The Blue Devils started the quarter on a 7-0 run, capped by a Smith free throw with 6:42 left in the half, to extend their lead to 23-10. The Blue Devils would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at nineteen, at 33-14, on an A'ajah Slocum layup with 2:35 left. The Hawks would end the half on a 10-2 run, capped by a Alexia Hufana three point point play with less than a second left, to trim the Blue Devils' lead to 35-24 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Hawks would trim the Blue Devils lead to seven, at 35-28, on a Shirley-Ohashi jumper with 9:01 left. The Blue Devils would extend their lead back to double digits, at 40-30, on a Slocum free throw with 6:48 left in the quarter. The Blue Devils led 49-36 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils would pull away. The Blue Devils started the quarter on a 5-0 spurt, capped by a Slocum layup with 8:55 left, to extend their lead to 54-36. The Blue Devils would keep their double digit lead and won 62-47.

Chelsea Shirley had fourteen points for the Hawks. Jaydon Williams had a game high twenty points for the Blue Devils. Malia Clark had eleven and Hufana has nine, off the bench, for the Hawks.    

The Hawks shot 27.1% (16-59) from the field, 22.2% (4-18) from the three-point line and were 57.9% (11-19) from the free throw line. The Blue Devils shot 38.9% (28-72) from the field, 16.7% (2-12) from the three-point line and 50% (4-8) from the foul line. Cosumnes River's defense forced twenty-six Blue Devils turnovers while the Blue Devils' defense forced thirty-two turnovers. Merced outrebounded Cosumnes River 48-43 and the Blue Devils had twenty two more points in the paint (42-20) than did the Hawks.

The next game for the Hawks will be Tuesday as they take on Butte College. Tipoff is set for 6 pm
