Women's Basketball Begin Season With 2-2 Record

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress Chargers (2-2) have began their 2021-2022 campaign with four straight road games beginning on November 3rd. The Chargers opened up the season with a win at El Camino College and then traveled to Merced College for a three-day tournament against Merced, San Joaquin Delta, and Fresno City College. 

Cypress came out of the gates hot as they charged out to a 40-16 lead in the first half against the El Camino Warriors. The Chagers had four players in double figures, Jaylene Oviedo (16), Malia Goldsmith (11), Alexcia Alvarez (11) and Thao Truong (10). After an evenly matched second half, Cypress would coast to their first victory of the season 72-53.

The Chargers next test would come in Northern California where they traveled to Merced College for the Pepsi Cola Tournament. The Chargers began the weekend against tournament host, Merced College. The Charger defense tightened up for the second straight game as they held Merced to 53 points. Team Captain, Malia Goldsmith, led the team with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting with four three-pointers. Thao Truong filled up the box score with eight points, seven rebounds, and three assists. The Chargers would go on to win the game 63-53. 

On Friday, Cypress would would challenge a powerhouse program in the north, San Joaquin Delta. Jaylene Oviedo and Malia Goldsmith each poured in 14 points, but the Mustangs were just too much for Cypress to handle. The Chargers fell to San Joaquin 96-52. Unfortuneatly, the story on Saturday was similar to Friday's game as the Chargers were outmatched by Fresno City College. Oviedo (19) and Truong (12) continued their excellent offensive play, but Cypress struggled on the defensive end, 84-55. 

UP NEXT: Women's basketball will continue their tournament circut as they head to Ventura College this weekend (11/18-11/20) for a three-day tournament. Cypress will match-up against Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday, tip off will be at 4pm.
