SAN BRUNO – The West Hills College Lemoore women's volleyball team is 1-1 to open the 2023 season following a split at the Skyline College 4-Way Classic on Friday.
The Golden Eagles opened against a tough Lassen Community College squad and suffered a 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-18) loss. But West Hills was able to bounce back and left the Bay Area with a five-set victory (25-19, 17-25, 11-25, 25-23, 15-5) over host Skyline.
In the loss to Lassen, sophomore Leah Mosqueda led the Golden Eagles with 8 kills. Sariah Serrano totaled 11 digs, Grace Grimaldo added 10 digs, and Amaya Keovilaysane-Ruiz had 10 assists.
West Hills secured a happy trip home with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Skyline. The Golden Eagles trailed 2-1 before rallying to win the final two.
Mosqueda played a key role in the victory with a match-high 17 kills. Serrano also came up big with 13 kills and led all with 23 digs. Lexa Gallardo posted 22 digs, Grimaldo had 19 digs, and Keovilaysane-Ruiz paced the offense with 18 assists.
West Hills returns to action on Wednesday (Aug. 30) when the Golden Eagles travel to Santa Rosa Junior College for a pair of non-conference matches. WHCL is set to face Shasta College at 3 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. contest against host Santa Rosa.
