Canyons Erupts for 4-2 Home Win Over Sequoias
The Cougars (1-1-2) scored three goals in the opening half to outlast COS and earn first victory of the 2021 season.

The Cougars claimed their first victory of the season on Tuesday, outplaying visiting College of the Sequoias by a 4-2 final score.
Canyons (1-1-2) scored three goals in the opening half, but still found itself in a tight match throughout the remainder of the contest.
COC sophomore, and captain, Francisco Ornelas was the first to get on the board with his scoring touch in the 6th minute. The goal, which was the first of the season for Ornelas, came on an assist from Enrique Gutierrez
Freshman Josh Swanson extended the advantage for Canyons at 2-0 in the 19th minute on an unassisted goal.
The Cougars seized further control of the match with Guillermo Martinez, on an assist from Dylan Sullivan, finding the back of the net in the 33rd minute for a 3-0 score.
Sequoias (0-1-2) managed to strike back in the 44th minute, with a goal by Adrian Lopez and assisted by Alejandro Saldana for the Giants.
COS used the scoring play to help maintain its momentum into the second half. The Giants got back on the board in the 55th minute with an unassisted scoring play by Moises Cortes which tightened the match at 3-2.
Canyons, which had previously scored just two goals in its first three matches, had one more scoring run left, however.
COC sophomore Cesar Perez provided the insurance goal in the 57th minute, with his first score of the season coming unassisted.
The Cougars were active on the attack with 15 shots compared to eight from the Giants. Sequoias earned six corner kicks compared to four from COC. Each team was charged with a yellow card.
Cougar goalkeeper Chase Moynihan (1-0-0) started the game and earned the win after allowing two goals and recording two saves. Ivan Kerum started the second half for Canyons and allowed a lone goal but did not factor into the decision.
COC is back in action Friday, Sept. 10, at Oxnard College. That match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
