It came down to the wire, but Citrus College pulled out a close 61-58 victory over Merced College Friday afternoon at the 40th Annual Charger Classic, hosted by Cypress College.
The Owls improve to 5-2 on the year, while the Blue Devils drop to 3-4 overall.
Jolleen Olia led the Owls with 16 points (5-for-22), while Kristin Morella followed with 14 points (6-for-10).
Sammy Martinez grabbed 15 rebounds to help Citrus win the glass 37-to-31.
With just a minute left on the clock, Kaylana Viray came up big with a huge triple off a Morella assist to put the Owls in front by three. The Owls got a big stop and despite the Blue Devils getting one last look at the rim before time expired, Citrus wouldn't let them get a good look to secure the three-point victory.
Citrus has a tough task on Saturday as it takes on No. 4-ranked Palomar College on Saturday at 5 p.m. back at Cypress College.
