Sequoias Softball Sweeps Ohlone in Dominant Doubleheader Performance
Visalia, CA – The College of the Sequoias softball team put together an impressive showing in Saturday's doubleheader against Ohlone College, securing a 6-1 victory in the opener before rolling to a 12-1 win in game two. With the sweep, the Giants improved to 3-1 on the season.
Game 1: Sequoias 6, Ohlone 1
Behind a dominant performance in the circle from Grace Chojnacki (Mission Oak HS), the Giants controlled the first game from the fourth inning on. Chojnacki (1-1) struck out 15 batters while allowing just three hits and one run in a complete-game effort.
Offensively, Shelby Somavia (Redwood HS) got things started with an RBI double in the fourth inning to break the scoreless tie. Nayzeth Gonzalez (Hanford HS) followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0. The Giants put the game away with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run inside-the-park home run from Isabella Ortega (Dinuba HS), her first of the season.
The Giants finished with 11 hits, led by Ortega (3-for-4, 2 RBIs), Somavia (2-for-3, 2 RBIs), and Taylor Hastin, from Tulare Union HS, (2-for-4, two doubles).
Ohlone's only run came in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Alina Sanchez, but Chojnacki closed the door, retiring the final four batters she faced.
Game 2: Sequoias 12, Ohlone 1 (5 Innings)
The Giants carried their momentum into the second game and wasted no time seizing control. Taylor Hastin (Tulare Union HS) starred on both sides, driving in four runs while pitching a one-hitter in the five-inning run-rule victory.
Hastin set the tone in the first inning with a two-run homer, and Sequoias blew the game open with a seven-run third inning. The big frame was fueled by RBI singles from Skye Gomez (Temescal Canyon HS) and Nayzeth Gonzalez (Hanford HS), along with a sacrifice fly from Emilee Santos (Corcoran HS).
Hastin (2-0) was just as dominant in the circle, striking out eight while allowing only one hit and one unearned run over five innings.
Sequoias finished with eight hits, including two each from Hastin and Gomez. The Giants' aggressive baserunning and timely hitting helped put the game out of reach early, sealing their second win of the day.
