Cuesta Softball Splits Twinbill with Taft, 5-4 and 3-4

Cuesta Softball hosted Taft for a doubleheader and each team walked away with a win.  The host Cougars beat the visiting Cougars in an 8-inning victory to open the day, 5-4, while the visiting Cougars took the finale, 4-3.  In the opener, they ended their regulation seven-innings tied at 3-3, and Taft scored in the top of the 8th inning, but Pitcher Jillian Davis (pict) helped herself complete her victory.  The Cougars tied the game and then Davis, with a one-out in the 8th, smacked an RBI-single for the walk-off win, 5-4.  Davis connected for two of the Cougars' seven hits in the game, while also holding Taft without an earned run for eight innings.  All four of Taft's runs were unearned and Davis picked up her third victory of the season. In the nightcap, the Cougars kept their Game 1 momentum and burst out to a three-run lead after three innings.  Unfortunately, their bats went silent the rest of the game, while Taft chipped away at the lead in each of their last three at bats to split the doubleheader.  Taft scored once in both the 5th and 6th innings and finally overcame the Cougars' early lead with two runs in their final at bat for the win, 4-3.  2021 Team MVP Madelyn Mata and Freshman Emily Valdez accounted for four of the Cougars' six hits in the game, but Taft broke through for the win by pounding out 14 hits in the contest.  The split places the Cougars at 6-7 on the season.

Cuesta hosts College of the Siskiyous next Friday (12/2 PM) as they continue their pre-conference schedule.
