Tyler Newton, who built Butte College into a state power at the community college level, is the new women's basketball coach at College of the Sequoias.

Newton, who will be a full-time instructor in the college's Physical Education department, was chosen out of an original field of 60 applicants.

"We are really excited for Tyler to join our COS family," said Athletic Director Brent Davis. "He is an expert in basketball, is extremely organized and a top-notch recruiter. We have had a long history of success and we feel our program will be in great hands."

Newton had recently completed his seventh season at Butte, and the Roadrunners had another stellar year, going 30-2 overall, winning the Golden Valley Conference title for the fourth year in a row, and reaching the state semifinals. Butte was the No. 1 ranked team in California for most of the past season.

Newton was named Northern California Coach of the Year by the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association, the second time he has been chosen. He has also been the Golden Valley Conference Coach of the Year four times.

Newton's record at Butte was 119-52 over seven seasons (actually six due to COVID), including a 104-20 mark the last four years.

Butte was state runner-up in 2023, reached the state tournament (elite 8) in 2022, and made the regional finals (state top 16) in 2020.

The new Giants coach is a native of Burbank and attended Burroughs High School. He attended Antelope Valley College before continuing at Shasta College, where he was inducted into the Shasta Athletic Hall of Fame. As a sophomore he earned all-conference and all-state honors.

Newton capped his collegiate career by playing at the University of the Pacific, where he led the Tigers to two Big West Conference titles and a No. 14 national ranking his senior season.

At Pacific he earned a bachelor's degree in Communications, and has dual master's degrees from Concordia College, in Exercise Science and Athletic Administration.

After college, Tyler played professionally for seven years in Japan, Austria, France and Australia.

Newton returned to Shasta as the lead men's assistant coach for two seasons (2013-15) before becoming the head girls basketball coach at Pleasant Valley High School in Chico, where he compiled a 48-9 record with two league championships and two CIF Northern Section titles.

For over the last decade, Newton has also served as an individual skills coach, helping players develop and achieve collegiate scholarships.

"Coming to COS has fulfilled my goal of becoming a full-time coach at the college level," Newton said. "My family and I are excited to come and get integrated into the college and the community."

Newton becomes the ninth coach in COS history. The program was begun in the spring of 1978 with Tom Gilcrest coaching the Lady Giants from 1978-92.
