Clovis women, Sequoias men are Central Valley Conference champions for fourth straight season

FRESNO – The Clovis Community College women and College of the Sequoias men continued their dominance as both teams won their respective Central Valley Conference cross country championship for the fourth consecutive season. The 2022 CVC Championships were held on Wednesday at Woodward Park.

Clovis has won the conference title every year since its inaugural season in 2018. The CVC Championships were cancelled in 2020 due to COVID.

On Wednesday, the Crush women came away with four of the top-five finishers in the event on their way to 21 team points and the conference title.

Freshman Julia Martinez led Clovis in second place as she cleared the 3.1-mile course with her time of 19:27.6. She was followed by teammates Walker Douglas (third place, 19:32.0), Evelyn Zambrano (fourth, 19:51.3), and Jennifer Recinos (fifth, 20:05.2).

Caliska Avila from Fresno City College broke up the Clovis contingent, finishing in sixth place at 20:24.1. Fresno City finished third in the final team standings with 66 points.

Two more Crush runners followed with Megan Duran in seventh (20:36.0) and Gabriella Avila in eighth (21:05.4).

Sequoias' Liliana Salado won the women's individual championship, clocking in at 19:20.1. A pack of Giants took the No. 9-12 spots to help earn a second-place team finish with 43 points.

Sherlyn Hernandez was ninth at 21:17.0, followed by Mariah Fuentes (21:31.0), Anahi Loza (22:23.0), and Andrea Hernandez (22:32.5).

Porterville's Kristta Kunza was the Pirates' lone competitor and finished in 15th place with a time of 27:50.6.

On the men's side, Sequoias just edged Clovis by one point (27-28) to win its fourth straight Central Valley Conference championship.

The men's team title came down to a battle for seventh and eighth place as COS' Adam Aguilera (22.:29.5) beat out Clovis' Dominic Bien (22:29.8) by three-tenths of a second.

Clovis freshman Sebastian McGehee was the men's individual champion, clearing the four-mile course with a time of 21:20.9. COS captured the next two spots with Juan Santacruz in second (21:32.9) and Fernando Hernandez in third (21:59.6).

Clovis' Marcus Jauregui (22:22.3) and Aron Teffra (22:21.0) finished fourth and fifth, followed by Anthony Illan (22:24.2) and Aguilera to round out the top-seven and all-conference honors.

Fresno City was third with 88 points and was led by Jose Ramirez in 16th place at 24:33.3. Porterville finished fourth with 107 points and was paced by Sal Renteria in 21st place with his time of 29.19.1.

Up next is the Northern California Championships set for Nov. 5 at Rohner Park in Fortuna.
